El Sinaloense sticking around · 12.09.08

Contrary to my prediction, 2-year-old sensation El Sinaloense is staying in training at Hastings. Owner/trainer Juan Olmos is aiming him for the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity on October 5. El Sinaloense came out of his easy score in the CTHS Sales Stakes last weekend in good shape, but according to Olmos will probably be rested for a few days before resuming serious training.

The youngster has now won five straight, including four stakes, and seems almost a half-furlong better than any of his local competitors. Sending him against stronger competition elsewhere (eg. California or Woodbine) seems the next logical step. However, perhaps trainer Olmos wants him to gain more seasoning before taking him on the road. It is also possible that seeing what happened to Dancing Allstar made him a bit gun-shy.

I still think the $100,000 Ascot Graduation Stakes on October 26 is also a strong possibility, however. At 1 1/16 miles, the final big test for local juveniles will show whether El Sinaloense has what it takes to go a distance or if he is merely a talented sprinter.

Thanks to 24 Hours’ Jim Reynolds, I also now know how to pronounce the speedy gelding’s name: “El Sin-ah-low-en-sa”. It’s a popular musical style in Mexico, perhaps best described as a cross between mariachi and hip-hop — yes, really.
