"The Georgia Straight" discovers The Track · 27.09.08

Racing at Hastings has earned two prominent mentions in Vancouver’s news and entertainment weekly, The Georgia Straight. This week, sports columnist Jeff Paterson features leading apprentice rider Stephanie Fedora:

“I never considered myself an adrenaline junkie, but when push comes to shove, I guess I am. I love being in the gate. It’s that initial spring of the gate and everybody coming out, because it’s anybody’s race at that point. I love being right up next to another horse and I love that competition down the lane when horses are going head to head. That’s huge for me.”

“When you’re on the back of a race horse, it’s the next closest thing I can think of to flying on your own,” said Fedora, who, at 105 pounds, weighs less than one-tenth of the horses she rides. “It’s all about being able to control a 1,200-pound animal with nothing but your fingertips. That’s empowerment right there.”

You might remember reading about Stephanie previously, both here and elsewhere.

And last week, Hastings Racecourse was touted as the best place to make a bet in the Straight’s Best of Vancouver 2008 listings.

  1. It is about time that the younger crowd understands how wagering on a horse is MUCH more productive and entertaining than pulling a handle and simply being lucky.
