Slots open at Hastings · 20.11.07
I almost missed this, it was so far under the radar.
There were no ads or big announcements for the opening of Hastings’ new slot-machine lounge on November 10 – apparently just a TV news report the night before. But there was still a line-up to get in, and the temporary facility with 150 slot machines and an OTB parlour quickly filled to capacity. “Maybe it was friends at the track who told them,” said Great Canadian Gaming Corp. executive Howard Blank. Last-minute negotiations and permit delays, which meant that “we weren’t sure exactly when it would be open”, prevented any meaningful advanced marketing, he added.
It could still be for nothing if the Hastings Park Conservancy succeeds in quashing the Vancouver by-law which allows the slots. The appeal hearing is scheduled for 29 January 2008.
