- If I Was a Horseman — “… I would know that unbalanced Thoroughbred racehorses breakdown…. I would know it is impossible to produce balanced racehorses training and racing around left turns only…. I would know that a horse (or human) standing unnaturally still and stiff in a tight space like a racetrack stall for 23 hours per day is susceptible to arthritic conditions…”.

“If I was a horseman…“That was probably the most sensible article I’ve read in a long while. Maybe there is “hope “yet for North American racing with this attitude, but have we enough time left ?

Traditions are so ingrained that I would not hold by breath, unfortunately. NA trainers and riders could learn a lesson from racing in other jurisdictions: Europe, Australia, Japan

Is there any reason why horses can’t be brought out to graze in the Hastings infield for 20-30 minutes a day?
Even Lucien Laurin let Secretariat graze every day at Pimlico before the Preakness. “Like a dozen vitamins!” he said.

The infield is both uneven and dangerous, full of geese and their droppings, small sprinkler heads, underbrush like long vines that could trip horses, mechanical equipment storage areas etc. Too many items, including assistant starters and cameramen running a muck, to make it a safe enough place for loose horses to stay without dangers and distractions.
