Stayers' Watch: La Zanzara Handicap · 12.02.09
As the Big Spruce Stakes, originally scheduled for 25 January at Aqueduct, was eventually cancelled due to bad weather, this year’s first Stayers’ Watch report covers the La Zanzara Handicap (ungraded, 4&up f/m, 12f), run 11 February on Santa Anita’s turf track.
German bred racemare Caprice, who finished third in Keeneland’s Dowager Stakes last year, trailed the field of six fillies and mares for the first half-mile, then rallied to win by 1 3/4 lengths in a time of 2:29.97 over a “good” course. Restless Soul took second, while pacesetter Brushed Gold hung on for third.
Caprice’s connections recognize that stayers’ races like the La Zanzara are her thing. Unfortunately for her there are no other distaff stayers’ turf races scheduled for the current Santa Anita meeting — she’ll either have to shorten up, or be sent elsewhere to race.
