San Luis Rey Handicap
Spring House was looking to win his second-straight stayers’ contest on the Santa Anita turf course. The winner of the San Luis Obispo last month seemed best-suited to take the San Luis Rey Handicap (gr. IIT) this past weekend.
It was, however, not to be. Midships scored his first graded-stakes win, wiring the field in 2:25.63 for 1 1/2 miles on a “firm” track. Medici Code was 1 3/4 lengths back in second, 3 1/2 lengths clear of Artiste Royal. Spring House finished last in the 5-horse field, reportedly bled, and was vanned off the track.
Pan American Handicap
The grade IIIT Pan American Handicap was taken off the Gulfstream Park turf course as a result of day-long showers and contested on a sealed main track. In addition, the race was shortened from 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 miles, and provisionally lost its graded status. So no Stayers’ Award points for winner Buddy’s Humor, or place and show horses Presious Passion and Sligovitz.
