Dancing Allstar on the comeback trail · 16.04.09

You might remember the troubles that Dancing Allstar had last year: a tough road trip to Calder’s “Summit of Speed”, a flipped palate at Woodbine, and a disatrous return to Hastings, all leading to being turned-out in August for the the rest of the year.

So it’s good to read that the 4-year-old chestnut filly will return to racing this Saturday at Woodbine. Dancing Allstar is due to face seven other older fillies and mares in Canada’s first graded stakes of the year, the 6-furlong Whimsical Stakes (Cdn-G3). If she returns to her normal form, look for her to set the early pace. She’ll be in tough coming off a layoff of almost eight months, but hopefully the long rest will have done her good and that her natural talent will carry her to a win, or at least a good finish.

Update: She’s back — and how! Dancing Allstar dictated the pace almost from the start of the Whimsical on her way to a 1 3/4-length victory, dashing the 6 furlongs in a sharp 1:09.16 without urging. Her “vacation” obviously did her nothing but good. “She ran back to her old races. She’s just a brilliant filly”, raved jockey James McAleney. “She looks like she’s at least three or four inches taller and even wider…. She’s got a great constitution, and now she’s got a body that matches it.”

  1. If the problem was just a souring to racing Terry Jordan can fix that. I am reminded of a similar situation with the Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and Storm Flag Flying: undefeated and then it all fell apart, a layoff and a shell of her former self came back.
Lets hope this one is different.
