Derby 2009 take-aways · 4.05.09
- … and that’s why they call him Calvin “Bo-Rail”.
- I’m rather embarassed to admit that I didn’t realize until after the Derby that Mine That Bird was Canadian-bred. He joins Omar Khayyam (U.K., 1917), Northern Dancer (Canada, 1964), and Sunny’s Halo (Canada, 1983) as the only non-U.S.-bred Derby winners [correction: also Tomy Lee (U.K., 1959) – thanks Tim!].
- Classy move by Mine That Bird’s connections to drape their blanket of roses over Barbaro’s new statue, and then give the roses away.
- Another classy gesture: trainer Chip Woolley giving credit to Dave Cotey, who trained Mine That Bird last year as a two-year-old.

Mine That Bird is not a Canadian Bred.
He was a stakes winner at Woodbine and then voted Canadian 2yo Champion.

IronMike — thanks for the clarification. I let my excitement get the better of me and mis-read the pedigree. Thanks for reading!
