Inspired in part by the BBC television series Connections), and in part by the concept of six degrees of separation, Left Coast Racing presents a little brain-teasing quiz.
Make the connections between:
- Seabiscuit
- Shannon Mews (seniors’ residence in Vancouver)
- William F. Buckley Jr.
Answers to follow presently….
Update: Seabiscuit needs no introduction. One of his main rivals in California was Indian Broom. A very speedy horse, Indian Broom set a world record for 1 1/8 miles at Tanforan (1:47 3/5, a record that stood for 14 years) prior to finishing third in the 1936 Kentucky Derby. He was owned by Austin C. Taylor, a British Columbia businessman whose ACT Stockfarm was one of the most powerful stables on the West Coast, from Agua Caliente to Hastings, in the 1930s. Taylor’s Vancouver mansion was named “Shannon” — after his death in 1965, the property was sold and redeveloped as “Shannon Mews”. In 1950, Taylor’s daughter Patricia married American conservative author and TV host William F. Buckley Jr.
