Bug me not! · 13.07.09

The recent “horse flu” epidemic that swept through the Hastings backstretch earlier this month appears to have run its course. As reported here, a number of horses were scratched from races on Canada Day, and one full race-card, that of July 3 (Friday evening), was cancelled. Thing were back to normal by the following week, with the July 10 evening race card boasting a full slate of eight races.

Also as speculated here, sources have confirmed that local favourite Spaghetti Mouse was a victim of the virus, which explains his sub-par performance in the Lieutenant Governor’s Handicap on Canada Day.

  1. I talked to Mike Heads about the bug on Sunday and he said it was “hit and miss” as his wife’s barn (Barb Heads) only had 2 of about 40 infected. It was “regional” with some barns near what might have been the source case, hit harder. Good thing was it’s short clinical course.
