Huitzi's woes · 28.10.09

For the second-straight year, a speedy two-year-old who dominated his opponents earlier in the year has faltered in the fall.

Last year it was El Sinaloense who racked up a series of easy wins at 6 and 6.5 furlongs. But in the Ascot Graduation he failed to stretch out to 1 1/16 miles. He may have been tired or hurting, or perhaps he simply couldn’t stay — regardless, he has not won since.

This year it was Huitzilopochtli who stood atop the two-year-old ranks at Hastings for most of the season, winning all five of his races. But in Sunday’s Ascot Graduation — his first attempt going a distance — he never threatened and finished far out of the money in seventh place.

Coincidentally (or not?), both El Sinaloense and Huitzilopochtli are owned and trained by Juan Olmos. For “Huitzi’s” sake, I hope the parallels with “El Sin” end there….

  1. Speed is the domain of the precocious horse. Stamina goes along with maturation and many NEVER make that transition.
