Horse of the Year co-champions? · 16.11.09
There have been some calls to allow Eclipse Award voters the option to vote for Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra as “joint” Horses of the Year. See this discussion thread for a summary of opinions, pro and con.
My opinion is, let the Eclipse Award voters vote on it as usual (i.e. no “co-champion” option), and let the votes fall where they may.
IF Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are tied in the voting — or even if the result is very close, say within 5% — THEN call it a tie and announce them as co-champions. Otherwise, force voters to suck it up and make a decision — it isn’t brain surgery, and nobody’s going to die if you choose “wrong”.
If deemed necessary, the NTRA (or whatever body decides such things) can award the “loser” a unique, never-to-be-repeated “special achievement award” of some kind.

Three groups get votes:National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers Association. Our own Randy Goulding told me that BEFORE the Breeder’s Cup, it would take a miracle for anyone to unseat Rachel Alexandra. Well that miracle did happen. It will no doubt come down to the old East/West bias and their being more votes in the East Rachel will win.
