Stayers' Watch: Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes · 28.04.10
Closing day at Keeneland’s 2010 meet was highlighted by the Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes (gr. IIT). Last year’s runner-up Musketier returned from a six-month layoff to score in the 1 1/2 mile turf test last Friday, April 23.
Stalking a leisurely pace early in the race, Musketier stayed in the middle of the pack. Timeless Fashion set quarterly fractions of :25.70, :51.33, and 1:16.24. Ascertain and Pick Six drew even with the pacesetter after the mile in 1:41.53, with Pick Six taking the lead as the field turned for home. But Musketier was also moving up, and took over around the eighth-pole and went on to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Nine-year-old Brass Hat rallied well to take second behind the 8-year-old winner, ahead of long-shot Blushing Bear. Final time: 2:31.32.
