Stayers' Watch: Singspiel Stakes · 6.07.10
On Sunday’s undercard to the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine, Spice Route won his first race in over a year, taking the Singspiel Stakes (G3). The 6-year-old gelding was actually making his first start of the year after injuring himself during training over the winter, and the win was his first since last year’s Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes, breaking a six-race losing streak.
Spice Route, the 3-2 pre-race favourite, relaxed well off the pace, allowing pacesetters Cool Gator and Grey Boundary to set some relatively easy fractions. Cool Gator eventually took a clear lead, but couldn’t hold off Perfect Shower and Solitaire who had tracked the pace closely. Meanwhile, Spice Route rallied from eighth place coming around the final turn as Solitaire took over. Those two horses battled briefly in the stretch before Spice Route took command, drawing away to a 3 3/4 length victory. Solitaire and Perfect Shower held on to second and third place, respectively. Time for 1 1/2 miles on Woodbine’s E.P. Taylor turf course (rated “firm”): 2:26.74.
