Late last week Keeneland ran two turf stayers races:

Grey Goose Bewitch Stakes (28 April)

Co-favourite Keertana spent most of the 1 1/2-mile Grey Goose Bewitch Stakes (gr. IIIT) near the back of the seven-horse field. But the classy race mare made a powerful move coming into the stretch, caught Honimiere near the eighth-pole, and rolled on to score a 1 1/4-length victory. “She probably just likes to have three turns. It seems that she’s run some pretty powerful races when we run her (at that distance)”, said trainer Tom Proctor. My Baby Baby also rallied late to catch Honimiere for second. Time on “good” turf: 2:33.08.

Elkhorn Stakes (29 April)

Musketier successfully defended his title in the Elkhorn Stakes (gr. IIT) on the closing day of the 2011 Keeneland spring meet. Rahy’s Attorney set easy fractions for most of the 1 1/2 miles, but by the time he entered the stretch he was being challenged by a wall of horses, including Musketier. The 9-year-old grey, who won the race in 2010 and finished second in 2009) rallied from sixth place in the field of ten in the final quarter-mile, then drew off for a 1 1/4-length win. Pool Play finished second, Windward Islands was third, while Rahy’s Attorney tired to finish fifth. Time on “yielding” turf: 2:32.04.
