Stayers' Watch: Singspiel Stakes · 7.07.11
[Sorry for the lack of new content hereabouts, recently — I’ve been reminded that people do read Left Coast Racing, after all. Onwards…].
Veteran turf runner Musketier won the Singspiel Stakes (Gr. IIIT) on June 26 as part of the undercard for the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine. The German-bred 9-year-old grey won the race for the second time in his 40-race career, rallying in the final furlong of the 1 1/2-mile turf test to best Grassy by a neck. Musketier’s previous victory in the Singspiel was in 2009.
Rahy’s Attorney, the 2-1 favourite, had led the field of seven through leisurely fractions — :52.77 for the first half-mile, and the mile in 1:41.07. He was joined by Simmard around the half-mile pole, and the two dueled into the stretch. Meanwhile Grassy and Musketier were coming on and soon took over. Grassy had the lead, but Musketier dug in under strong urging and toughed-out the victory. Windward Islands finished a troubled third, another length back. Final time over the officially “firm” E.P. Taylor turf course: 2:29.54.

They were crawling in this one as is so often the case on the very long marathons as it comes to the final fraction alone. On that very very long stretch, final fraction dominates most of their intermediate to long turf races as they have a lot of room to fan wide and a lot of room to come rambling down the lane LATE.

A bit of math confirms your observation, showing that the final half-mile was run in :48.47 – more than 4s faster than 1st half-mile.
