Fact: This year’s entries into the British Columbia Racing Hall of Fame will be popular old campaigner Lord Nelson, and Robert Hall, owner and trainer of the great George Royal in the mid-1960s. Both confirmed recently by the DRF‘s Randy Goulding and the Vancouver Sun‘s “Dr. Sport”, Greg Douglas.

Rumour: The good news is that teletheatre wagering in B.C. was supposedly up this year; the bad news is that live wagering was down; the worse news is that the live handle was supposedly down more than the teletheatre handle was up.

Fact: Since the end of the Hastings meet, a number of local trainers have moved their operations south to Portland Meadows (eg. Troy Taylor), California (also Troy Taylor), and Turf Paradise (Phil Hall, Mike Anderson, Robbie Henson). See Railbird Corner for details and out-of-town updates.

Rumour: Great Canadian Gaming Corporation’s lease of Hastings Racecourse is due for renewal in 2012, but negotiations between GCGC and the City of Vancouver are being complicated by a threatened lawsuit by the City against GCGC, citing the lack of improvements to the racing facilities as specified in the original lease (I’m guessing the long-promised parking garage and new barns are the major issues?).

  1. Our good trainers have traditionally done well in the Arizona desert. A few riders from this neck of the woods have prospered there as well. Have to pay the bills all year long.
