Another stayer honoured · 28.02.08

Hollywood Park has just announced their Spring/Summer 2008 stakes schedule. Among all the other prestigious stakes races, three stand out for yer most ‘umble correspondent.

Hollywood’s two established turf stayers’ races, the Jim Murray Memorial Handicap (gr. II) and the Round Table Handicap (gr. III), are set for May 10 and June 14, respectively. New to the schedule is the $100,000 Gallant Man Stakes, to be run on June 1. The 1 5/8 mile race on Hollywood’s main “Cushion Track” course is another addition to the new stayers’ series leading up to the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Dirt “Marathon” on October 25.

The new race honours Gallant Man, chief rival of Hall-of-Famers Bold Ruler and Round Table. One of the greatest true stayers of the 20th Century, Gallant Man was also perhaps the greatest racehorse to never win a national championship. He was also a successful sire and broodmare sire, a source of both speed and stamina, the two key ingredients for any successful thoroughbred.

  1. Round Table is under appreciated. Not only was he a great on the track, he was an outstanding sire and lived very well into his 30’s.
