Hastings notes · 12.06.08
- Mario Gutierrez is on-track to defend his local racing title. As of this week he has 31 wins from 110 starts — almost twice as many as second-place Fernando Hernandez Perez (19) — for a 28% win percentage.
- Gutierrez’s younger brother Juan Carlos Gutierrez won his first race as an apprentice on May 31, and his second the day after. Unfortunately soon afterwards he broke his collarbone in a spill, and is still out of action.
- Another successful apprentice on the grounds is Stephanie Fedora, who has four wins to-date at Hastings. She was recently profiled twice by Tommy Wolski, in his Hoss Talk column and on his TV show.
- Alas, there have been two fatal breakdowns at Hastings in recent weeks. Ironically, both occurred after the race as the horse was pulling up — shades of Eight Belles — and both at the same spot, near the 1 1/8 mile chute off the backstretch.
- Pedro Alvarado is doing reasonably well on his comeback from suspension, with 11 wins so far this season.

Ms. Fedora is the real deal should she get some decent mounts. I have seen her fly out the back of the starting gate and then, without a word, dust herself off and climb back aboard.
