Stayers' Watch: Stars and Stripes Handicap · 5.07.08
Silverfoot helped his connections celebrate the U.S. 4th of July holiday by winning the $175,000 Stars and Stripes Turf Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Arlington Park. The 8-year-old gray (almost white) gelding had not won a race in over two years, going winless in ten starts over that period, but he put it all back together on Friday.
Trailing the field behind leisurely fractions, Silverfoot moved up along the inside after a mile, took command entering the stretch, and won by two lengths under a mild drive. Telling was the only opponent to present any late challenge to the winner, rallying strongly to finish second, a length ahead of Canela. The final time for the 1 1/2 mile race was a modest 2:30.40.

The very nature of turf racing’s “wait and see” pace structure, lends itself to slow times. Only when there are significant pace prompters (European entries are commonly made up of one pace horse helping to stir it up early for his entry mate closer), will you see intermediate times fast enough so that the field has to run after the three quarter fraction in order to make the final time faster. This is why, at many French tracks, times are NOT EVEN RECORDED.
