Stayers' Watch: Sunset Breeders' Cup Handicap · 13.07.08
Warning Zone fulfilled the promise he had shown in earlier California turf distance races by winning the Sunset Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) on the final day of the Hollywood Park spring/summer meet today.
In-the-money finishes in the San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano Handicaps at Santa Anita had shown that Warning Zone had some talent as a stayer. In the Sunset, the 4-year-old colt settled in the middle of the pack early, steadily moved up around the turn and into the stretch, and took the lead past the eighth pole. Cedar Mountain finished a length back in second, while Porfido, after leading briefly at the head of the stretch, faded to third another 1/2 length back. San Luis Rey winner Boule d’Or set the early pace with so-so fractions, then weakened badly to finish sixth. Final time: 2:26.95.
