Stayers' Watch: Greenwood Cup · 21.07.08

Ten-year-old gelding Evening Attire won one for his many fans on Saturday, winning the $250,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philadelphia by 8 1/4 lengths. The veteran gray registered his first career win outside New York, and set a new track record in the process: 2:29.90 for 1 1/2 miles. Phil the Power caught early pace-setter Barcola for second place.

The Greenwood was part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win And You’re In” series, which means that Evening Attire earned an automatic berth in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Dirt “Marathon” in October — yay! His owners still have to pay the entry fees, however — boo!

Trainer Pat Kelly was non-committal about sending Evening Attire to the BC: “We’ll have to see how he is and talk it over”. That being said, he struck a more hopeful note for fans of his horse, who has become one of the few high-profile distance specialists around: “I’ll have to start looking at another 1 1/2-mile race for him”.

Champion Stayer Award standings — update

Evening Attire’s win vaults him into contention for the unofficial Champion Stayer Award, putting him in fifth place. His 8 points ties him with On The Acorn and Cedar Mountain; however, the fact that all his points come from dirt races (the Greenwood Cup and his second place in the Brooklyn Handicap) gives him the nod.
